The UNESCO 2019 Forum on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship (GCED) took place in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, on 2-3 July 2019 with a thematic focus on learning and teaching for peaceful and sustainable societies: From early childhood to primary and secondary education.
UNESCO, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Training of Viet Nam and the Viet Nam National Commission for UNESCO, organized this biennial global forum on ESD and GCED, which brought together approximately 350 stakeholders from all regions of the world (e.g. policy-makers, education practitioners, representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), experts, development community, and the private sector, etc.) actively working in the areas of ESD and GCED. Lina Benete, Education Programme Specialist and Head of Education Unit at UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, attended this event as well. The forum aimed to support synergies between ESD and GCED and foster a holistic approach to Target 4.7 of Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Education and the Education 2030 Agenda. It also provided a platform to present the outcomes of UNESCO’s study on how the three learning dimensions of ESD and GCED (cognitive, socio-emotional and behavioral) are reflected in curricula at pre-primary, primary education and secondary education levels in ten countries from across the world, with a view to understanding trends, identifying major gaps and challenges and highlighting innovative approaches to harness the potential of the three domains of learning in order to support sustainable development and global citizenship.
